| The Mahopac Sports Association has numerous opportunities for our town's youth to participate in a variety of sports this fall, ranging from instructional in-house play to high level competition offered by MSA travel teams. Teams are comprised of children as young as kindergarten all the way to seniors in high school. The fall sports offered by MSA are boys and girls soccer, boys baseball, cheerleading and both tackle and flag football.
The Mahopac 12U girls Thunderhawks travel soccer team began their season by going undefeated in the Lewisboro Labor Day Tournament, taking first place by winning an exciting shoot-out competition. The Thunderhawks' record currently sits at 3-1-1, with five more games to be played. The girls also traveled to Stroudsburg, Pa., for their first ever two-day tournament as they competed in the Dale Marsh Memorial Day Tournament. The Thunderhawks played three 60-minute games and were undefeated, thus entering the Championship game in first place. The Championship game was tied at 1-1 after regulation, so the Thunderhawks and Fleetwood Tigers would decide the outcome on penalty shots, where the girls earned a second-place trophy. Coach Chris Dietz remarked that the tournament was a memorable experience for all the girls both on and off the field.
This fall, the Mahopac 13U baseball team decided that after winning this summer's WPBA baseball Championship, that they would stretch themselves by moving up to 14U for the autumn season. The move has proven to be a good one for the young men as they have played very well, only dropping two extra inning affairs at the higher level. Web gems and scalding hot bats have followed the boys up to the 14U level. Johnny Fierro, Joe Lapadulla, Chris Scalara, Brett Mattos and Nick Schering have all played well in the field, scooping every hot shot and tracking every long outfield drive. Kieran Corrigan and Chris Dellamadaglia have raised their game on the hill to new levels, while Chris Finch and Patrick McCary come ready every game to play anywhere on the field. The gloves of Anthony Grandinetti, Eyder Fierra and Jeff Cohen have been golden, while Johnny Guistino is a lefty slugger with a penchant for tape measure shots. Each player on the team has a specific strength that they have brought to the field every game to showcase to their family and friends who come to enjoy watching them play.
The boys' 14U travel baseball team is also enjoying an extremely satisfying fall WPBA season as the squad is currently 9-0 and in first place in the ultra competitive league as they prepare for a deep playoff run. Pitching has been the key as the team is sporting a microscopic 1.56 team earned run average. The pitching staff of Anthony O'Mara, Luis Berdecia, Jarett Rooney, Mark Vassallo, Joe Fichara, Tommy Kirinci, Dave Harlen, James Kelly, Chris Aquina and Carlo Servillo have combined to throw six shutouts, including two no-hitters. Mahopac has outscored their opponents 85 -12 this season as their team batting average is a whopping .477.
Aquina, Rooney, Fichera, Jason Marano and Dom Pentavalehave led the way at the plate. Mike Senatore, Craig Browning and Andrew Furgiuele round out a very talented group of boys. Coaches Mark Vassallo, Craig Browning and John Aquina would also like to publicly thank the hardest working team mom, Diane Browning, who makes it all work.
